Number Sense
Number Sense sessions are planned and delivered daily so that all children to have time to practise the appropriate number facts for them. These sessions are separate from the class maths lesson. Children requiring extra assistance to learn and remember are supported by the teacher or teaching assistant during this time.
KS1
In Year 1 the children will be practising counting in multiples of 1, 2, 5 & 10. They will be learning the number bonds to 10 by heart and starting to learn the number bonds to 20.
In Year 2 the children will be building on from Y1, counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 from any number up to 100. They will practise recalling and using the multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10 tables. The children will practise recalling and using the number bond facts to 20 and use this knowledge to derive and use number bonds to 100.
KS2
In Year 3 the children will continue to build on prior learning and practise the facts that are not yet secure from KS1. They will practise counting from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 & 100 and will practise recalling and using the multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8 tables.
In Year 4 the children will continue practising the Year 3 objectives and will move onto counting in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000. They will practise recalling and using the multiplication and division facts for all tables up to 12 x 12. All this practise leads to the MTC in June of Year 4.
In Year 5 and Year 6 the children will continue to be given time to practise the facts that are not yet secure plus they will practise identifying all multiples and factors, including finding all factor pairs. They will practise using known tables to derive other number facts. Number Sense time will also be used to practise calculations and solve problems using all previously practised number facts.
