Y2 Writing End of Year Expectations

Spelling
spell by segmenting spoken words into phonemes representing these by grahemes, spelling many correctly.
can spell many common exception words
apply spelling rules and guidance, inc contractions, possessive apostrophes and homophones
add suffixes to spell longer words, including -ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly (GDS)

Handwriting
form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters
use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.
use the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join some letters. (GDS)

Planning
consider what they are writing by planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about, sentence by sentence

Draft and write
write simple, coherent narratives about personal experiences and those of others (real or fictional) write about real events, recording these simply and clearly
write for different purposes
use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify
use co-ordination (using or, and, or but) and some subordination (using when, if, that, or because)

Evaluate and edit
make simple additions, revisions and corrections to their own writing by evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils (GDS)
re-read to check that their writing makes sense and that verbs tenses are used correctly and consistently
proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation

Punctuation
demarcate most sentences in their writing with capital letters and full stops, and use question marks correctly when required
to use new punctuation correctly, including exclamation marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).
